The Arch Society is a unique student organization for students in their third year or higher. The Arch Society provides service to the University of Georgia as official hosts and goodwill ambassadors.
The Men and Women of the Arch seek to serve the University of Georgia at all functions where it is desired to have students welcome guests and visitors to the University of Georgia. The Arch Society seeks to advance the University of Georgia through service to the offices of the President, the Provost, the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Senior Vice President for External Affairs, Alumni Relations, the Athletic Association and other University offices or officials at appropriate functions.
The Arch Society is named after the most prominent symbol of the University, the Arch. In 1857, an iron fence was erected along the northern borders of the campus. The Arch, located on Broad Street at College Avenue, became the main entrance and was modeled after the Great Seal of the State of Georgia with three pillars representing wisdom, justice, and moderation. Over the years the Arch has come to be one of the most recognizable symbols of the University of Georgia.
The Arch Society membership selection process includes an application, attendance at a mandatory candidate information session, and two interviews. Selection is based on the applicant’s poise, demeanor, knowledge of the institution, and ability to represent the university to its many, diverse constituents.
All full-time students who will be of third year status or above by years (not hours) with at least one (1) year of tenure at the University of Georgia on the date of the commencement of their term of service. Graduate students with at least one (1) year of tenure at the University of Georgia are also eligible for membership. Applicants must also be in good academic and disciplinary standing with their school or college, program of study, and the University of Georgia.
